HI,

I have 2 DB9M 4-Port, one is a newer model, it has a little factory reset button (serial number starts with 9445-03...) and it works perfectly. I just got another one, an older model (S/N 3000...), apparantly it was used in Boeing factory until now, however I have no idea on it's current IP settings, nor can I control it over a serial port.

PortVision DX (ver 4.) won't see it, if I connect it with the ethernet cable and try to find the IP using the MAC Address with arp -a command it doesn't list the device's MAC Address.

Is there a way to do a factory reset by hardware? If PortVision wont' see it, could it be a hardware failure?

Thanks.

Hello,

Thanks for posting your question. Some ideas for this situation:

1) The older DeviceMasters don't have a hardware reset button like the newer ones do. There's a procedure to reset them, but there are many steps. Personally I haven't done this myself, but the information is available at http://downloads.comtrol.com/contribs/devicemaster/help_file s/reset_to_factory_defaults.zip - you'll need an XPS file reader to open the documentation.
2) When connecting via the serial console, note that older DeviceMasters use 57600 baud rate while newer ones use 115200 as per http://downloads.comtrol.com/contribs/devicemaster/help_file s/how_to_open_a_console_serial_port_on_the_devicemaster.pdf - so it may be worth double-checking that.
3) It may be possible to find the device via MAC address by using the older 3.05 version of PortVision, available here: http://downloads.comtrol.com/html/DM_PRO_RTS_SERIALHUB_pvdx2 .htm - I would suggest trying v3.05 on a spare laptop or PC, with the DeviceMaster connected directly to the Ethernet port.

Please let me know if any of that is helpful. Thanks,

Matt

Hi Matt,

That was quick! I downloaded the old version of PortVision and it worked like a charm! I got the IP address and managed to access it through the browser as well. The interface is a bit different (older), so do you recommend updating the firmware? Will the PortVision 4 recognize the device if I update the firmware?

Many thanks!

I'm glad that helped! Yes, updating the firmware is a good idea and will allow the device to be recognized by a scan within PortVision 4.

The older firmware is only seen in a scan by PV3 and not PV4 because of a change to the scanning process (starting with PortVision 4.0 and SocketServer firmware 10.0). There's some technical detail about that change here: http://downloads.comtrol.com/html/DM_PRO_RTS_SERIALHUB_pvpx. htm#history

If for some reason updating the firmware isn't an option, you can still add the device manually in PV4, but you'll need to keep track of the IP and MAC because unless the firmware is updated, the older DeviceMaster won't be seen by a PV4 scan (even though manually adding it should still work).

Thanks,

Matt

OK, I will add it manually to PV4, I don't really need to update the firmware for now.

Thanks once again!
